The story of this winning image
I have to thank my friend and mentor Christopher Dodds for everything that came with the images I took at his master class on Bonaventure Island in Gaspésie, Québec. A few years ago, I spent 3 days on the island photographing the America's largest colony of northern gannets (50 000 couples!). It was an outstanding experience where I learn a lot about this photogenic bird and where I had the time to develop great imagery.
This particular image was taken on a tall platform overlooking the nesting grounds. The gannets are flying over thousands of evenly spaced nests as they bring back nesting material as gift for their mate. I loved that I was able to give the viewers a true bird's eye view. This image is very important for me. It was the one that caught a National Geographic photo editor eye, who offered me a feature on their blog. And this image won several major national and international awards including with Canadian Geographic, Canadian Wildlife Federation and National Wildlife Federation (USA).
And now it will be featured on the walls of one of the world’s top science museum. My dear gannet image is a true gift, that keeps giving!
